We’re now at the mid-way point of the school holidays and it’s safe to say that the novelty of having all that fabulous free time is beginning to wear off – for both parents and kids. Not only that but the earlier heatwave seems to have vanished into memory and the sunshine has been replaced by, to quote Peter Kay, “that fine rain that soaks you through”.
Budgets are drying up. The county’s supply of fish goujons and ice-cream has been much depleted and it’s now a challenge to entertain the kids without needing a second mortgage.
Luckily NOW TV has sent us a smart stick and entertainment passes to keep everyone amused, as well as some holiday gifts including a rather stylish suitcase which has been hijacked by Caitlin.
The NOW TV Smart Stick is a small device which plugs into any spare HDMI Port on a TV and connects to WiFi to allow you to stream the latest TV shows, movies, live Sky sport and kids’ TV by taking out a monthly subscription or by purchasing NOW TV Passes for a designated time period. Like other free to view TV services, you can also access apps such as BBC iPlayer, All 4, YouTube and Sky news.
We found the NOW TV Smart Stick easy to use and the amount of choice very impressive, for both adults and kids. For a start, there are over 300 box sets to choose from and loads of recently released films to watch on the movies channel – Wonder Woman, The Emojii Movie, Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them, Doctor Strange, Kingsman and Dunkirk.
Finding something great to watch is a breeze thanks to the Smart TV Stick’s voice search function – no more endless scrolling and it’s easy enough for the kids to use too.
You can choose your favourite programmes and add them to My TV so everything is in one place and there is also a Watch List which takes you straight back to where you left off with a show or movie.
We took our NOW TV Smart Stick on holiday with us to Devon and it was no problem to plug into the TV in our holiday rental and carry on watching our selected favourites. It’s a great piece of kit to have when the weather’s bad or you want a night in. It’s very comforting for kids to have their favourite TV shows on hand when they’re tired and grumpy – and a bit of a break for the parents too.
You can also watch programmes on your phone or tablet which is great if Caitlin and Ieuan don’t want to watch the same thing – which is frequently the case. Whilst we found the Kids channel suitable for younger kids, both my two loved having the latest family blockbusters on tap. Some of the kids’ programmes include Spongebob Square Pants, Paw Patrol, Best of Tom & Jerry, Fireman Sam and Teen Titans. You can find channels including Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network, Boomerang, Tiny Tots and, of course, CBeebies and CBBC.
To get you started, choose from one of three deals, selecting the NOW TV Smart Stick and the entertainment pass of your choice for one or two months. Thereafter, a monthly subscription fee kicks in.
For example, you could start off for just £19.99 for the NOW TV Smart Stick and a 2 months’ Entertainment Pass. After 2 months, you pay £7.99 a month.
Monthly subscription fees are £9.99 for Sky Cinema, £33.99 for Sky Sports or £3.99 for the Kids’ Pass – all with a 14-day free trial.
Given the cost of taking the family to the cinema these days, that’s pretty good value!
We were pretty impressed with the amount of choice NOW TV offers and the ease of use. The Smart Stick comes with its own remote which has all the functions you need without being overly complicated.
If there is ONE area I would LOVE NOW TV to consider, it’s adding subtitles. This is something that Netflix does well and, whilst there ARE subtitles available on NOW TV, it depends on the programme you are watching. So please NOW TV, think of us hard of hearing folks. (Yes, that is my husband shouting “put your hearing aids in”, you can hear in the background).
If you’re looking to avert summer boredom and find a great way to catch up with all the movies you’re too impoverished to pay a babysitter to go and see, get yourself a NOW TV Stick!
