A Quick Guide To Cleaning Your Upholstered Dining Chairs

The dining room is an integral part of every home. It is a place where families gather to share their meals and in some days, to celebrate special occasions.

Considering how heavily used the dining area is, you could imagine your furniture to accumulate different types of dirt – may it be crumbs, spilt soda or even oil from your hands.

With this in mind, it’s just fitting to clean and maintain them properly on a regular basis to extend its longevity.

Here are some basic tips on how to take care of your precious furniture.

First of all, vacuum

Start by vacuuming the upholstered chair to pick up all the dust and dirt that may be embedded on the fibres. Use an upholstery attachment for the vacuum cleaner to make sure all the loose particles are sucked away and the seat is thoroughly cleaned.

Take note of the upholstery cleaning codes

Like the care labels on your garments, upholstered chairs have tags where you can find certain codes that indicate what cleaning practice to apply. Example, the tag “S” means to clean the item with a dry cleaning solvent whilst “W” suggests cleaning only with water-based shampoo or foam upholstery cleaner. If you see the tag “X”, do not clean with either water or solvent-based cleaner. Refer to these codes to make sure you give your chairs the TLC they deserve.

Spot clean any fresh spills

Accidental spills may happen but make sure not to leave stains for too long on upholstered items. To avoid any upholstery disaster, clean it as soon as possible. Gently blot the spill with a folded towel. Do not try to rub it to prevent the stain from getting bigger. Just dab the stain until it is absorbed completely.

Fully dry the seat. If available, use a steamer or a hair dryer to fully dry the wet area as leaving it to dry naturally will not remove all the water. Leaving any moisture could lead to mould growth on your upholstery.

Contact a professional

Do not wait until your chairs get visibly dirty. It is recommended to have your upholstered furniture be cleaned by a professional every couple of years or so. The earlier you act on it, the better the results. Cleaning your upholstered chairs regularly will prolong the lifespan of your beloved furniture.
