Review: Makeup, Women & Hair (Mwah) Cardiff

Many years ago, when I was still living the corporate life, I wished there was somewhere you could go to have your make-up, hair and nails done to save you the bother of having to go home to get changed and then drive all the way back for functions and business clubs meeting.

As a marketing professional, these were frequent events and there is nothing particularly glam about getting changed in an office loo.

Now, just a stone’s throw from my old law firm offices, there is the Mwah Cardiff (Make-up, Women & Hair) salon, situated in Churchill Way just off Queen Street in Cardiff’s main shopping area where you can have the works.  Hair, make-up, nails, spray tan, waxing, sunbed, brows and they’ll even apply your fake lashes for you.

I was recently treated to a blow-out and a make-up session with the lovely Alex and Lee to experience what is rapidly becoming not just a treat but a part of their regular beauty routine for students and working women alike.  After two hours of being pampered, I can quite see why.

This new salon is well appointed, well lit and spacious with comfortable chairs, a razzle-dazzle makeup station and backwashes with neck guards so you can actually have your hair washed without cricking your neck.

The coffee is decent and comes in mugs (I always prefer a mug) and, blissfully, the background music is not too intrusive.  Who wants to spend 2 hours having to listen to a commercial radio DJ bellowing at you whilst being sold wills and urged to get your PPI sorted. Not me.

Everyone is welcome at Mwah Cardiff, although the business is primarily focused towards us ladies, their male clientele will pop in for a haircut.  What I particularly liked is that Mwah isn’t offputtingly trendy and welcomes all ages. Pampering (or, frankly sanity-preserving self-care) doesn’t have an age limit.

Whilst having my hair done, I had a chat with Alex while she curled my hair (without curlers, looping it and setting it in place with clips).  Nails and lashes are among the most popular treatments and many students will pop in to have their hair and make-up done before a night out.  I’m not sure I would have felt self-assured enough to splash out on this during my students days in Swansea Uni back in the 80’s but times have changed.

The team at Mwah recommend Tatti Lashes which are favoured by the Kardashian matriarch, Kris Jenner.  I have never worn false lashes and getting someone else to apply them for you seems a much simpler route.  Sadly on the day of my visit, I had an eye infection so wasn’t able to have my eye makeup or lashes done but it is something I am looking forward to having done for Christmas.

Talking of which, Mwah Cardiff is currently offering a great pamper package of make-up, Tatti Lashes, Shellac Nails (hands) and a blow-out for £65 which, personally, I think is a great deal.  The whole session should take around 2 to 21/2 hours and the salon is open until 6 pm on Saturdays, 7 pm on Thursdays and Fridays and 5:30 the rest of the week.  Booking is advisable because places are currently going fast.

I learned quite a bit from Lee who did my make-up for me.  Applying your foundation with fingers or sponge wedges is a bit old school he told me and recommended a Zoeva Buffer Brush 104 (or a similar one from the Spectrum range) which allows you to push the foundation into your skin.  Lee uses a wide range of brands from MAC to NYX to Makeup Revolution and is happy to share his techniques and product advice.  There was something in his make-up kit to suit every budget.

A blow-out and make-over usually costs £70 but is on offer for £50 for a short time only.  Lee is also planning a masterclass later in the year with champagne, cupcakes and a demonstration of different makeup looks on a model.  You’ll be able to ask questions and learn the techniques needed to recreate the look at home.  Contact the salon for more details.

As busy mums we often don’t take the time to prioritise ourselves, do we?  Many of us won’t have the budget to treat ourselves to full-scale pampering very often but with a manicure from £15, a blow out from £25 and party lashes from £18 Mwah has something to perk every woman up now and again.

There’s a loyalty card too which offers rising discounts from 5% up to one free cut and finish.  You can even have yourself photographed looking Insta-gorgeous.

Thanks to Alex and Lee I left the salon feeling like a million dollars and big thanks too, to owner Jen who made my visit possible.
