GIFTED: I always used to trek into Cardiff to buy lingerie. Not very often, because the thought of wrestling with other shoppers and stripping down to my scanties in a department store fitting room is never particularly appealing. The heat, those lights, those unforgiving mirrors! If only I could have found somewhere decent to buy my lingerie online.
Now I do go and get my bra measurement checked a couple of times a year. Breast size really does fluctuate and, us menopausal ladies often find that our bra size goes up. So does everything else, mind, but let’s not dwell on that.
Of course, you can measure yourself, and you’ll find instructions on how to measure your bra size at home here. It’s also a good idea to get into the habit of doing that and checking the health of your breasts at the same time. (You should be doing that once a month anyway).
But I find when I am measured, the stern ladies with the tape measures are far stricter than I am and put more emphasis on support than my preferred benchmark, comfort.
Once you know your size, however, it’s far easier to shop online and to try on different styles and brands in the comfort of your boudoir. Even if you do have to listen to “mum what are you doing in there?”
I was offered the chance to review some gorgeous items from online lingerie store UK Lingerie, one of three companies created by Dawn Barber and her husband Jonathan, UK Swimwear and UK Tights being the other two. Their mission is to provide top notch customer service and a more extensive selection of sizes than is often available from rival companies.
At UK Lingerie you’ll find a vast range of quality lingerie, nightwear, bodywear, activewear and shapewear for all shapes and sizes.
You’ll find lingerie brands such as Gossard, Curvy Kate, Shock Absorber, Charnos and Spanx.
I chose a bra and pants set to review from Lascana – the Lascana Soina Padded Bra and matching brief in a smoke blue colour.
Lascana, which is a discovery for me, is a best selling lingerie brand in Europe which offers reasonably priced lingerie in a range of contemporary colours.
The lightly padded bra has a full cup in lovely floral lace. I really liked the unusual strap detail and found the bra to be true to size.
I prefer an underwired bra, but they aren’t always the most comfortable to wear – not so with this one which doesn’t cut in or dig.
It comes with a matching Lascana Soina brief in the same smoke blue lace. It has a simple fit with a comfortable and soft waistband and no frills or scalloped lace to show up under tight-fitting clothes.
I really loved the Lascana Soina bra and brief set, and it makes a change to have sexy yet comfortable underwear in a different colour from black or red. The bra retails at £40 and the briefs at £23.
The next item I was sent was the Spanx Spotlight on Lace Brief in Vintage Rose, one of a surprisingly broad range of pieces by Spanx Shapewear you’ll find at UK Lingerie. Spanx is a brand that I have wanted to try for years, given the frequent accidental appearance of Spanx worn by celebs on the red carpet.
Even more so because, I recently read, menopause can gift us ladies an extra 10 lbs and the ‘meno middle’. (Thanks for that Mother Nature!). I think it’s fair to say I have a bit extra to shape these days and, ladies, let me tell you these Spanx will certainly compress your wobbly bits.
Whether you can put up with wearing them for a long time in one go, however, is questionable. I’m a complete wuss for any form of restrictive clothing, having lived in leggings for years. What isn’t up for debate is that they certainly give you a smoother line under clothing and the vintage rose detail of these is very pretty.
The husband just rolled his eyes (as usual) and said: “they’re supposed to compress your tummy!”. Men have no idea what we go through, do they?
The new Spotlight range by Spanx is great if you want a little compression with a sexier design. I loved the lace detail around the bottom, and the high waisted design smooths the tummy with a mix of nylon and elastane. There is a cotton gusset, and the Vintage Rose colour is gorgeous. These particular briefs retail at £34.
I will certainly be giving these an outing on my next posh ‘do’ – although I hope it won’t be a 3-course meal…
If you are looking for lingerie online, why not explore what UK Lingerie has to offer. You’ll be spoilt for choice. Returns are straightforward (as long as you haven’t removed the tags and have tried briefs on over pants) and, happily, you have 30 days to send things back by freepost. I hate having to pay to return goods. There’s also free worldwide shipping – a pleasant surprise these days.
What do you think of my choices? And have you tried Spanx?
