Art is a personal thing, isn’t it? I find that I know what I like very quickly and that is pieces which challenge and make you think a little.
I recently discovered the striking work of Shropshire-based ceramic artist Carolyn Clayton and her range of flower people.
Since 2004 Carolyn who has a BA Honors in Ceramics and Computer Science, has been working as a part-time demonstrator of china flower making at Coalport China Museum and in 2013 she combined her love of flower making and sculpture to create her unique Flower People.
“We are all creators,” says Carolyn, “I am fascinated with physics and the universe and how we are all just fragments of energy, from the same source creating our reality. We are all the same, whether we are human, flowers or animals, we are all made of the same stuff. Part of everything. We are all beautiful in one way or another, each different and unique, but inside the same, and for me my flower people represent that.”
Carolyn uses several types of clay to create her art but prefers the finish of Parian clay with its marble-like appearance.
I was sent the lovely Sunflower Tree Lady which you can see in the photos below. She cheers me up every time I look at her, especially since the sunflower is Caitlin’s favourite bloom.
Carolyn’s unusual sculptures make great handmade gift ideas and she offers commissions for personalised gifts. You’ll find her work on sale on her website and in shops and galleries such as Harrods in London and Macy’s in San Francisco.
Since working with renowned sculptor Andrew Sinclair MRBS, she can now offer much larger sculptures for public places too.
You can find out more about Carolyn and her work on her website www.cazamic.com, where you will also find tutorials in bone china flower making, online clay tutorials and you can even watch her sculpt live online.
Carolyn is also offering a £50 voucher towards the sculpture of your choice – either as a unique piece of artwork to enjoy yourself or as a rather special gift.
