Home & Classroom Kids’ Craft Projects For The New Year

The new year is a great time for parents and teachers to plan some exciting new kids’ craft projects to help pass the cold grey days of January and February.

Here is a round up of some great craft ideas which will see you through the year and make it a memorable one. These ideas are ideal to make in small groups, pairs or even for the children to make alone. Each has been designed as a way to boost their imagination and creativity, whilst having fun.

Stick Puppet Kit

The new year is the ideal time to talk to your kids about their hopes and ambitions for 2018 and beyond. Using a stick puppet or face kit, you can get the children to create puppets or models of themselves, and get them to write what they want to achieve in 2019.

Stick puppet are easy and fun to create, kits usually come with pre-cut hats, hairstyles, clothes and people shapes – so everyone can get involved. All you will need are a couple of glue sticks, and you can let the children’s imaginations run free.

Hugging cards

Valentine’s Day is a special time of year for both children and adults alike. It is a lovely chance for the children to make a gift to bring home to their parents or guardians and let them know how much they care.

A hugging card is a quick to make and personal gift which allows the children to be creative. There are kits available with everything you need including coloured card which is already pre-cut. All you will need are glue sticks and the children’s imaginations. Most kits will include a face which the children can decorate to look like themselves and also space inside for them to add a personalised message.

Painted stones

Not too long into the year, Easter approaches, and as you teach the children about spring and this religious festival, you can be sure one thing on their minds will be Easter eggs and sweet treats.

This craft involves the children collecting large round egg-shaped stones outside, the smooth ones will work best. Give the stones a wash and hand one out to each of the children.

Next, its time to get painting, the ideal supplies for this would be a large box of ready-mixed assorted paint in a tray, which allows the children to pick their favourite colours. It would be a good idea to pre-paint a few yourself to show your pupils the kind of colourful patterns they could create.

Once the eggs are dry you could use them to create your own Easter egg hunt and award a prize to the winner – it doesn’t have to be chocolate  – perhaps a special storybook.

Chart Paper Butterflies

When spring arrives you will hopefully notice a lot of beautiful butterflies in the garden or in the school grounds. A great way to teach children about these beautiful insects is to ask them to create chart paper butterflies.

Bird-Inspired Art Project

When you talk about spring, you can’t miss mentioning beautiful birds and quirky insects. Considering the fact that they are an integral part of the Spring season you can ask your kids to carry out bird-inspired art projects. It will not only keep them occupied but will put a smile on their faces. They can use different colours to take their art projects to the next level or even create pictures of their own fantasy birds.

Rainbow -Themed Art Projects

One of the best ways to encourage children to play with colours is to inspire them to work on rainbow-themed art projects. For example, you can ask them to get busy with tissue paper rainbow art puzzle, rainbow sticky window art, and painting rainbow on plexiglass etc.

Natural art pictures

Once spring and summer are in full swing, gardens will once again be filled with brightly coloured leaves and flowers. It is important for children to learn about nature and what better way than to turn the process into a fun craft. All you need to do is have the children go outside and gather up a variety of natural materials in different shapes, sizes and colours.

During the hunt for materials talk to them about the different types of leaves and plants as it is a great time to capture their interest.

You will need some large sheets of A3 card – patterned cards work well with animal prints or bugs as it brings the pictures to life. Once everything is gathered up, help the children arrange their materials into fun animal shapes such as hedgehogs, owls or even spiders. These pictures will work well as a fun collage at home or on the classroom wall.
