The Longterm Health Effects Of A Serious Car Accident

Car accidents leading to severe injuries and fatalities are common. According to WHO, at least 1.35 million people die every year in car accidents with another 20-50 million injured. Car accidents form a backlog of major health effects that continues to plague the population for many years. For example, even minor injuries tend to have devastating long-term effects on the victims. Most people do not realize that accidents do not just lead to physical injuries. They can lead to other problems that can be equally fatal. Some will not kill you but can ruin your life forever.

Here are some of the major health effects that people develop after a nasty accident.

Stress Disorders Related to Trauma

The most common disorder is PTSD. While we have come to associate it with military veterans returning from combat zones, they are more prevalent among accident victims than they are among the soldiers. The symptoms of the conditions are many, including psychological, mood, sleep, and behavioural problems. Victims are likely to develop hypersensitivity, guilt, fear, emotional detachment, and such symptoms.

Most people do not realize the effects of accidents. Even when they are negotiating medical compensation, they often ignore these types of effects. The lawyers at Hamparyan.com lament the lack of education for accident victims. Since PTSD and other stress disorders require long-term care, calculating compensation to cater to your needs adequately can be difficult. They always advise accident victims to take personal wellbeing as a long-term goal. Anything that affects health today and tomorrow must be factored into the compensation package.

Major Depressive Disorders

If the psychological and mental problems are not treated on time, they can quickly develop into major depressive disorders. People who develop temporary, minor, or major disabilities are prone to develop stress disorders. If they are untreated by a relevant specialist, they can lead to significant mental disorders such as depression. A man or woman who loses a limb or a woman or man who develops a considerable scar on her face might develop esteem issues. While it will start as a social problem, it can escalate into suicidal thoughts.

Men often fail to heed medical advice about minor injuries putting them at the greatest risk. People who don’t have health insurance are particularly vulnerable because they are used to postponing checkups and doctor visits. Seek physical and psychological examination and treatment after an accident, no matter the extent of the disaster.

Numbness and Loss of Sensation

Nerve injuries during an accident tend to conceal other physical injuries. For example, an injury to the nerves serving the lower body could prevent you from knowing if you have extensive damage in your legs. If a professional using various tests and scans has not checked you correctly, you might develop a loss of sensation and numbness over time. Physicians always advise you to give as much information as possible. Even if it is something small, a pinch, numbness, or anything unnatural, you should tell the doctor during an examination. While some nerve damages can be corrected through therapy and other options, allowing the nerve damage to escalate can lead to permanent loss of bodily functions such as walking or using your hands.

Whiplash Injuries

Accidents tend to elevate the level of adrenaline in the body. Adrenaline has both good and bad results. The good thing is that you can fight for your life. The problem with that is that it can suppress your knowledge of other pains. Shoulder, neck, and back pains always come after adrenaline subsides. While some of these pains are harmless going away within a short time, they can become chronic. It is advised that the doctor should take as many scans and tests as possible to rule out strains, fractures, dislocations, sprains, damages, and such things that could cause pain or discomfort to the person.

Whiplash injuries are always ubiquitous. Even people involved in minor accidents may develop general body fatigue, neck pains, and shoulder problems after the accident. You should not ignore them. While they can go away on their own, it does not hurt to rule out any future problems. Physicians and accident lawyers agree that only a thorough medical check-up can capture the full extent of the accident. Without it, the probability of a health issue coming up is real.

While the accident might not lead to immediate problems, it can act as a trigger for future health problems. For example, people who already have stress disorders might be prone to major depressive disorders because of the accident. The most important thing to do is to ensure that you have relied on medical help. When you are seeking compensation, it is imperative to have a holistic health status in mind. Some physical scars might easily be fixed through therapy and surgeries, but major psychological issues can have long term ramifications on your mental health.

Take Advantage Of The Summer Months With A New Deck Or Pergola

If you live in a hot climate, it’s usually during the summer months that the utility bills blow out of proportion – unlike dear old rainy UK where everyone hunkers down by the fire in winter. No, if you are lucky enough to have more than your fair share of sunshine, costs will be high to ensure that you keep your environment cool.  And that’s without factoring in other lifestyle costs (hello cocktails by the pool) just to ensure that you’re not burning up.

Fortunately, there are various ways to cool your body and nerves when the temperatures outdoors are making you feel uncomfortable. You can decide to take a dip into the, well, not so cool waters of the pool, beach, lake, or river. Alternatively, you can work on cooling yourself right in the comfort of your home.

Here’s how to take advantage of the summer months with a new deck or pergola.

Let the Parties Begin!

Summer is the season for partying and having a good time. But this can seem like a dream when you have your HVAC system failing you and with no places to go to keep cool. Instead of lamenting over the soaring summer temperatures, why not have a patio or a pergola constructed at your home?

There are so many things you can do with such upgrades. You can add a spa to go along with a pergola, a lounging area in your deck, and some cool gaming features to go with either one of them. This will provide you with spaces to have fun with your friends or family members. Instead of going out to have fun, bring the fun to you!

Add Value to Your Home

A new deck or pergola isn’t just about keeping cool and enjoying good times. These renovations can greatly help to increase the value of your home. For starters, these renovations or upgrades – depending on your point of view – will enhance your home’s curb appeal. Most, if not all, home buyers are looking for homes with that complete home feel, and a patio or pergola can help in improving this. The folks at Calgary deck builders insist that a nice deck or pergola with added features can significantly help in increasing the value of your home. In short, it will not only make your summer in your home worthwhile, but you will also have the option of selling your home for a better value.

Adding Privacy to Your Home

If you’re fed up of scrutiny from your neighbours and you’re looking for ways to add some privacy to your home, then decks and pergolas can be a great way to do so. It could be that you want to hold a private family get-together without the prying eyes of the neighbourhood and with a pergola or deck, this problem may well be solved. That said, you’ll still need to keep on good terms with your neighbours by being considerate where noise levels are concerned!

Reduced Utility Bills

Decks and pergolas are the perfect places to unwind during the warm summer months. Instead of having your HVAC system work extra hard to provide you with cool air, you can opt to chill out with your family in your pergola or deck while having a family fun time. You can invite your friends over, hold your business meetings, or just zen out right at your deck or pergola and save on your utility bills.

There are so many benefits associated with having a deck or pergola constructed at your home. You can take advantage of these upgrades to have fun or constructively, enrich your life and that of your family. You now have every reason to have a deck or pergola constructed at your home.

How to Take Control Of Your Finances And Pay Off Your Credit Card Debt

Budgeting is an important part of managing your personal debt. Although the process can be a little bit challenging, it can help you get a clearer view of your financial picture so that you can make smarter choices with how you spend your money. If you find yourself with a low credit score you can consider payday loans for bad credit.

Photo by Steve Johnson on Unsplash

Once you have a budget in place, the next step is to figure out how to cover all of your expenses without having to rely on credit cards.

#1 Avoid using your credit cards

Until you get your finances back on track, do your best to avoid using your credit cards. When you go to the store, try leaving them at home. If you need more of a deterrent, you can freeze them in a block of ice or cut them up and throw them away.

#2 Eliminate any unnecessary expenses

Go through your expenses line by line, looking for items that can be eliminated. For instance, you may be able to get rid of cable TV until your debt has been paid off. Sacrifices like these will make it much faster for you to get out of debt.

#3 Find ways to lower your essential expenses

Some expenses are essential and can’t be completely eliminated. In many cases, however, you can lower them. For instance, try comparing car insurance prices to see if you could be getting a better rate. Instead of throwing old vegetables away, turn them into soup. You can even lower your fuel expenses by walking instead of driving whenever you can. All of these small changes add up to big savings.

Photo by chrissie kremer on Unsplash

#4 Know where your money is going

Many people have a hard time understanding how they got into debt in the first place. Stay on top of how you are spending your money by setting financial goals and tracking all of your expenditures.

#5 Earn more money

One of the fastest ways to pay off your debt is by bringing in more money. Some of the ways that you can do that include:

– Taking on a second job

Selling items that you don’t use anymore

– Moving in with a roommate

Any extra money that you bring in can be applied directly to your debt.

Following these five suggestions will help you get control of your finances. Even though it will take some time to pay off your debt, knowing that you are moving in the right direction can provide you with a lot of relief.

Have You Been Diagnosed With An Underactive Thyroid?

It’s almost 4 years to the day since I was diagnosed with an underactive thyroid and, being me, I recall rushing straight home and terrifying myself by googling the subject of underactive thyroid symptoms!

underactive thyroid symptoms - woman having her neck examined

It’s important to understand what your test results mean.

I was prescribed 25mg of Levothyroxine and advised to have my blood retested in 6-8 weeks to see if the medication had improved the level of antibodies in my blood.

I am completely rubbish at taking medication and made the mistake of reading the side effects leaflet which came in the pill packet.

I now awaited weight gain, baldness, palpitations and depression and, after taking precisely 3 tablets, I was convinced I had developed dry eye syndrome since my eyes were sore and gritty.

The husband found his patience to be sorely tested (although he’s used to it!)

To be frank, even to this day I am unsure about what is going on with my thyroid or even if I have had enough examination to receive a full diagnosis and treatment properly tailored to my needs.

The problem is, if you visit the many thyroid forums, that testing in the UK only takes into account one of 4 antibodies, T4 and medicates for that whereas our American cousins say that a holistic approach is needed to supplement all four.

To add to the confusion, many of the symptoms of an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism) are the same as those suffered by many women during the menopause.

So what is the thyroid gland and what does it do?

The thyroid gland is a butterfly-shaped organ located in the base of your neck. It is about 2-inches long and lies in front of your throat below the prominence of thyroid cartilage sometimes called Adam’s apple.

The Thyroid System - underactive system - motherdistracted.co.uk
The Thyroid System

This gland produces hormones which regulate the body’s metabolic rate as well as heart and digestive function, muscle control, brain development and bone maintenance. Its correct functioning depends on having a good supply of iodine from the diet.

The thyroid function is normally regulated by a hormone produced in the pituitary gland (thyroid-stimulating hormone, or TSH for short), which ensures that neither too much nor too little thyroid hormone is produced.

If too little thyroid hormone is produced, the body functions slow down and the thyroid is said to be underactive – hypothyroidism.

If, conversely too much thyroid hormone is produced, the sufferer is said to have an overactive thyroid – hyperthyroidism.

Some underactive thyroid symptoms include fatigue, weight gain, cold intolerance, constipation, impaired fertility, and depression.

Some sufferers have also reported dizziness, inability to pay attention and memory loss, hair loss and tinnitus.

In truth, there are loads of symptoms and it can be very difficult to pinpoint the exact cause of these.

Underactive Thyroid is more common in older people and in women than men, with estimates that 10 times more women than men are affected.

The conventional treatment for an underactive thyroid is with the hormone levothyroxine (LT4 or Synthroid), which I have been prescribed.

If an underactive thyroid is left untreated for a prolonged period of time, more serious symptoms will develop as the condition advances, such as cardiovascular disease and raised cholesterol.

An underactive thyroid is a lifelong condition, so you will probably need to take levothyroxine for the rest of your life.

It’s important for the health of you and your baby that an underactive thyroid is treated properly before you become pregnant.

An annual blood test to screen for an underactive thyroid is recommended for individuals with this condition.

Current research tells us that the best diet for an underactive thyroid is one that contains whole foods, is high in protein, and naturally rich in iodine and selenium.

Seaweeds like kelp are an excellent natural source of iodine, whilst Selenium can be found in Brazil nuts, cod and mustard seeds – 3 to 5 Brazil nuts each day provides plenty of selenium for proper thyroid function.

I still feel I need to educate myself about my thyroid condition but can report that this small dose of Levothyroxine seems to have been enough to return my hormone levels to normal.

Where I am not so confident is that my grandmother had a goitre removed under surgery and I am hoping I don’t develop anything similar.

I’m still not entirely sure I trust Levothyroxine but for now it’s part of my daily life.

Since underactive thyroid seem to run in our family I will be keeping a close eye on the children too.  I still have so many questions!

Have you been diagnosed with an underactive thyroid?  I would love to hear your experiences and the lifestyle changes you have made to cope with this condition.

Choosing The Best Type of Running Shoes

As a runner, there are key things you need before hitting the road – appropriate running gear, water bottle and a belt to hold your keys and mobile but the most important item to get right is, of course, your running shoes.

Photo by Dulcey Lima on Unsplash

Running Shoes

Why is a good pair of running shoes necessary? Most people may grapple with this question and believe that any old pair of trainers will do, but the truth is that having proper running shoes ensures that you are safe, comfortable and don’t damage your feet and ankles. You wouldn’t race a minivan on a racetrack, right? Because it isn’t the proper vehicle for that.

Having the right running shoes is important because, without them, you are at risk of suffering knee pain, hip pain, Achilles tendonitis, plantar fasciitis, and other kinds of pain associated with having the wrong running shoes. You can also consider insoles for pronation.

Neutral shoes are perfect for runners with a higher arch, generally light body frame, and efficient foot biomechanics (which includes mild supinating, or when the ankle rolls outward). These are lighter models and are ideal for racing since they don’t “stabilize” the foot and arch whenever you hit the ground.

If you are looking for that won’t stabilize your feet whenever you hit the ground, then stability shoes are what you need. These are made with some structure to support the foot, arch, and ankle to prevent overpronation (when the arch collapses excessively). Overpronation may put you at a higher risk of suffering some running injuries and is therefore important to work with an expert to see how you run. This will tell whether you need a stability shoe, and if you do, Asics Gel Kayano is a great choice.

Motion control shoes come in handy for runners who need maximum cushioning. They are therefore meant for ankle stabilization and are therefore ideal for heavier runners. While they may be more costly, they prevent hypermobility of the feet whenever you hit the ground.

Minimalist running shoes have also been gaining popularity in recent years. These are low-profile, lightweight shoes designed to enhance your form of running. They also strengthen the lower legs and feet muscles and reduce injuries significantly since they lower the impact from each stride.

A good starting point is picking shoes that are categorized as “neutral/cushioning”, and not necessarily the extreme minimalist shoes. Ensure that the heel to toe offset for the shoes is 8-12mm to guarantee a fairly firm platform to keep off injuries and boost the biomechanics for efficient running.

Note that not all shoes are meant for you, and consulting your local specialist sports store or checking out a running shoe finder would be great. Minimalist running shoes aren’t “goals” to set sight on. However, if you are susceptible to constant injuries, you should consider trying a minimalist shoe.

Replacing Your Shoes

Most top-quality running shoes will do at least 300-500 miles before you need to replace them. Keeping two or more pairs of running shoes and alternating them helps extend their life by reducing daily drying, outsole breakdown, bacteria build-up, and so on.

Another hack is having various running shoe brands/models. This way, the body becomes accustomed to various stressors when you start to run.

Important Note: For training purposes, be sure to avoid extremes in shoes. Don’t decide to buy a pair of barefoot running shoes just for their popularity, or a pair of chunky trainers for their price tag. When it comes to footwear, common sense should prevail, and it is vital that you only pick what is best for you.

Tips To Make Your Post-Lockdown Party Go With A Bang

I’m sure many of us are looking forward to reuniting with our loved ones at the end of Lockdown.  I’m certainly looking forward to hosting a few get-togethers for friends and family but organising a huge party can often be a daunting experience – one you’d rather avoid!

You don’t want your guests leaving the place feeling bored and unfulfilled when the party is over – your reputation as a fabulous host is at stake so here’s an informative guide with helpful tips for making your soiree go with a swing and your barbecue with a bang.

Photo by Kelsey Chance on Unsplash

Choose an Appropriate Date and Time  For Your Event

Picking a perfect date can be an uphill task. So to avoid messing up, consider your guests. According to most event planners, you should begin figuring out about the event 2 to 3 months before its scheduled date. Because, to find an appropriate venue, you’ll need to take your time and possibly a budget too. And you don’t also want to stand in the way of the plans your guests may have. So the earlier you plan, the better.

The Venue Matters

Be unique. Rather than booking a regular haunt, why not consider renting a party house? There are plenty in the heart of the UK where you’ll find awesome venues for an unforgettable time – away from all the urban hustle and bustle. Move away from the busy, noisy city centre and you can find a party house less than an hour’s drive from London. You’ll get to enjoy all nature has to offer and plenty of beautiful countryside on your way. You can indulge in your favourite sport or hobby, for example hiking, cycling or rock climbing or just play tourist and visit the local villages and tourist attractions. If all you want to do is party, then the choice is up to you.

Renting a house through Party House comes with one more advantage, that’s too good to be true. Once your guests feel exhausted, their comfortable beds are a few steps away, where they can enjoy some peaceful rest.

Choose your guest list wisely

The guest list is down to you as host so make sure you invite people who will add a spark to a fun-filled party. Whether it’s family or friend, ask yourself this question – will they spoil the fun? If your friends go about bothering everyone once they get drunk, there’s no need for an invite.

Explore several resources likely to be helpful with the invitations. Software like Canva or Fotor will help. Upload your best image, write in a detailed invitation text, and proceed to send it through email to their proposed guests.

Another useful idea is to create a Whatsapp or Facebook Messenger group. Add your guests to the group. Together you can agree what people should bring or even decide on which activities you’ll engage in. Go have fun!

Tempting food and drink

Apart from an amazing venue, if you want to have an unforgettable party, ensure you have plenty of delicious eats and drinks. Here you’ve two options – to provide the food yourself or hire a caterer. If you think you are good, there’s no problem with organizing a potluck. Let everyone come with a dish and enjoy it together. Is the warm season approaching? Having a barbecue is something you’ll all enjoy. Remember to supply enough beer, wine, and soft drinks. Let everyone pick what suits them. For extra pizazz, have drinks that match your party theme, if you have one, that is.

Put together a banging playlist

What’s a party without music? We all know how important it is for a great party atmosphere. Use Spotify, SoundCloud, or Deezer to select a few playlists that will have your guests feeling charged up. Be creative. Don’t just go for the latest releases. Instead, think about songs that bring to life the moments and the funny experiences you had with your guests. Everyone will be singing out loud and passionately once the emotions set in.

Party Games – A Good Idea

Games are fun and a great ice-breaker. Choose something like Charades or try Read and Act.   For this one, everyone writes down funny experiences on a slip of paper.  The papers are all put in a bag and everyone takes one and acts it out. Some may be a bit embarrassing, though it’s never something serious.

Another game you can play (probably one of my favourites) is to put people in pairs and quiz them to find out how well they know one another (think “Mr & Mrs”). Try to ask weird questions and watch everyone in the room burst into laughter.

Or, how about the artist game? Let the most courageous person pose and the rest can draw him/her in 2 minutes. Apart from epic artists, everyone else will draw funny pictures that will leave everyone in stitches.

Stock up on plenty of fun toys for party games like novelty light up swords for parties or this giant twister for example and make sure you’ve got something to keep the kids entertained if it’s a family party.

Create lasting memories with photography

Lastly, you’ll want to make sure you have a memory of all the fun you had.  Everyone enjoys browsing through the pictures from the party the following morning or recapturing the special moments by looking back over photos with your friends. It’s a great way to create lasting friendships – as long as you don’t plaster embarrassing photos of them all over Facebook! Finally, if you are a social media fanatic, use appropriate hashtags, and remember to tag your location to reach out to all your audience.

Parenting 101: Helping Your Kids Find Their Passion

It’s a great thing as a parent, isn’t it, when your children start to explore who they are and discover their passions in life. In the generations before us, there was perhaps less emphasis on encouraging kids to seek personal fulfilment and more on toeing the line, fitting in and knuckling down to get a good job and pay your way in life.

These days, I like to think that we are more spiritually enlightened and our eyes are open to the fact that while money is a necessity to live, it is more important for our children to discover themselves instead of resigning themselves to a job or career they hate for the rest of their working lives.

How Can I Help My Child Find Their Passion?

Often, however simple this may sound, the best way to find out what your child’s passions are is simply to ask them. Many times, children will have a hundred different things they are passionate about during a week, but the one thing they really love will always remain. If you have noticed your child talking about one thing in particular, over and over, then it can be safe to assume that it is something they are passionate about.

Whether it be horses, cars, or dolls, you should encourage your child to pursue their passion, as much as your finances allow, of course. It is important, however, to remind your child that money does not grow on trees and draw a line between blindly financing anything your child asks for and spoiling them.

Pay Attention To Their Talents

The notion of cultivating free-spiritedness can seem daunting. If that is the case then check out this website, so you can learn more about children growing their personalities. Growth leads to maturity and freedom for appreciation.

If your child is not as vocal about their passions, then pay attention to their talents. Perhaps you catch them out of the corner of your eye playing football against a wall in the garden whenever they can, or you hear from teachers at school that they are very good at mathematics.

By paying attention to their talents you can get a better overview as to what it is that their passions are, perhaps more so from directly asking them. Oftentimes if a child excels in a particular subject or activity, it can be safe to surmise that it is one of their passions, as children, unfortunately, tend to only invest their attention into something that they are personally interested in.

Sign Your Child Up For a Sport

If your child neither expresses particular interest in any specific subject or activity nor speaks of their passions, then it would be appropriate to take a step toward encouraging them.

By signing your child up for a sport, you may introduce them to something they love and hold close to them for the rest of their life. Oftentimes sports, especially at school, can help them find friends and network with other students, and make lifelong connections.

Many of the most world’s most famous athletes were introduced to their sport by their parents and,  without that introduction, would have been unlikely to achieve the heights of sporting prowess they subsequently achieved.

Allow For Boredom

Every single parent probably hears these three words once a day, ‘Hey, I’m bored!’ What you might not have known is that by allowing for boredom, your child’s hidden interests and talents may come to the surface. With little to do around the house, they may end up going outside and pursuing a sport or rather finding a particular subject they are interested in and want to learn more about.

Be sure to keep plenty of books lying around your house so that if your child happens to utter those three familiar words, you can offer them a book to read. More so in our current generation do we see children expressing less of interest when it comes to reading and writing. Perhaps that is one of the most important things you can cultivate in your child from a young age.

Without the written word, the world would not function. Surprisingly, many teenagers have yet to have even read a book, whereas in our parents’ generations they would have been avid readers by the age of ten. Start your child off slowly, introduce them to the works of Roald Dahl and Dr Seuss, and perhaps your child will develop an affinity toward reading and writing.

Whatever your child does express an interest in, as long as it isn’t harmful to them, you should encourage them and remind them you love them and will love them whatever they decide to do. Your child is often your best friend, and as they grow older and eventually have their own children, they will look upon their childhood as a reminder of how to raise a child, or how not to. Be their biggest supporter and never forget to tell them how proud of them you are.

What to think about when moving to a new area

The housing market is back in action and I’m sure there’s a lot of people out there who, after two months in lockdown, have realised that they are in need of a change of scenery. Moving house is such an exciting time, and choosing to relocate to a new area is even more so.

We’ve just moved house but are staying local in Dinas Powys as the Vale of Glamorgan is such a beautiful place to live, but choosing a new village, town or city to live in is a big decision.

Visiting somewhere is very different from living there, so relocating can be a bit of a risk. It’s important to consider everything involved and really get to know somewhere before you move.

Think about transport connections

We can sometimes take living next to a motorway or a train station for granted. Even being near to an airport – no one wants to be faced with a long journey home after a flight. It’s things like this that when you move to somewhere more remote, you might find frustrating – especially as a family with children to ferry from one place to another.

It might be nice to be away from the hustle and bustle and noise pollution but depending on your needs, it’s important to strike a good balance.

Check average house prices

Of course, you need to know whether you can afford the kind of property you want within an area. House prices fluctuate not only from region to region but from town to town depending on an area’s wealth and economy. It’s important to explore whether your budget realistically matches up and, if you find the right property, you want to know that you’re getting it for a good price. CIA’s local property stats tool can provide you with this information.

If things are looking a little expensive, take a look at neighbouring towns or villages. You might be surprised at how much prices can jump by moving just a few miles away. You’re still in the area you want to be in, but you’re getting away with paying a little less.

Try out the amenities

A good area will have great shops, restaurants and cafes. When it’s safe for us to do so, get familiar with the neighbourhood and the area that you’re looking for a property in. Whether it’s somewhere you visit a lot or not, take a few tips and imagine yourself living there as a local. If possible, make use of the local amenities, such as the pubs, the supermarkets and perhaps the leisure centre. You could even speak to some locals and ask them about their experiences living in the area.

It’s also a good idea to take a few trips to an area at different times of the day. Does it still feel safe at night? Does the area become overcrowded with cars during rush hour and school pick-up and drop-off times? These are the kind of things you may not know if you are just heading to the area for a Saturday morning out or a Sunday stroll.

Explore the local schools

It goes without saying, but if you’re moving far enough away for the need to change your children’s school, then do lots of research into the schools available. A change of school has an enormous impact on a child, so it’s important to ensure that it’s a positive one! Again, if you can talk to any families in the area then there’s no better way to get a good idea of what a school is really like.

If you know you are going to be moving to a particular area, try and visit a number of schools to compare. Think about the location and the journey to and from, the school’s approach to learning, it’s academic performance and any special offerings it may have, such as extracurricular activities and school trips.

Look for low crime rates

When moving as a family, you want to make sure you are moving to a safe area. No matter how nice a property might be, if it’s in an area with a mid to high crime rate, you might struggle to settle. Living in a high crime rate area can also have a big impact on things such as car and home insurance premiums which you may very well find increase significantly.

Use online tools (such as the local property stats tool mentioned above) to check an area’s crime rate. If being in a safe area is important to you, you’ll want to look for an area with a rate of 10 or below.

Moving areas is likely to be one of the biggest decisions you make for your family. It changes everything – often for the better. It’s important to experience different places and meet different people, especially whilst the kids are young, and moving is a great way to do this. Just be sure to do plenty of research and take your time.

How to Make your Move to a New Home Easy

There are signs that the UK Lockdown may be approaching an end – depending on who you believe.  This is undoubtedly good news for all those who have been stuck in a property chain trying to move home.  Estate agents are now allowed to arrange viewings, albeit ‘virtually’, although there are stories of property deals collapsing since there is so much uncertainty surrounding the economy at the moment.

We were lucky enough to move at the beginning of February, just before everything ground to a halt and, whilst acknowledging our good fortune, none of us is in any hurry to do it all over again anytime soon.  Moving home can be incredibly stressful, can’t it? So, if you can do anything to help reduce the amount of stress you are under when moving home, then I’d heartily recommend it!

One of the best ways to reduce stress and aggravation when moving home is to use the services of a professional removal company. A removals company can take care of all of the packing, truck loading and unpacking at your new home, which will save you a lot of time and energy.

Getting a Quote

A search on the internet will show that there are many professional removal companies that offer a high-quality service at a competitive rate, but how do you pick the right one for you and your budget?

Firstly, always make sure that you get as many quotes as you can so you have something to negotiate with.

You may be able to get a rough quote over the telephone or the internet, but to give you an accurate quote, the company will need to send someone to survey your house.

The company representative will visit each room of your home and gauge how much space of a container or truck will be needed to transport your belongings.

The quote is generally based on the square footage required to transport your things, and when the company representative is there, it is a good time to ask all of your questions directly, such as:

1. What is included in the quote?

2. What level of insurance do you offer?

3. How long have you been in business?

4. What level of training do your employees undertake?

5. Are there any extras on top of what you quote?

Judging a Company by their Representative

As well as the contact you have with any company in the initial stages, the best way that you can judge a company is by the representative that they send to your home.

When we trust someone with all of our worldly possessions, we want to be safe in the knowledge that they are going to be well looked after, and look for such reassurance.

The way a company can do this is by sending a personable employee that has excellent communication skills and is easily approachable. Knowledge is also important so that they have the ability to answer any of the hundreds of questions that you may have and trust me they have heard them all before.

Whether you are looking for companies offering removals in Cambridge, or any other county, you will want the representative to be able to answer any question in an assuring manner and be able to explain the process that they use.

Don’t forget, you don’t necessarily need to hire huge removal trucks when a van hire service might do the job just as well and at far less cost if you are prepared to do some of the work yourself.

Making a Decision

You should take into account all factors before choosing which company you are going to use to move your belongings to your new home. The price is important, and so is your impression of the company, along with the quality of their vehicles and also the level of insurance coverage you receive.

All of these factors are very important to consider, with no single one outweighing any of the others. You will need to choose a company that ticks as many of your boxes as possible, even if they might be a little bit more expensive. It is also a good idea to look online for reviews of people’s experiences with your potential moving company. It is good to get an insight into how they operate, and the level of service that they offer.

When you are putting all of your possessions in the hands of someone else, it is reassuring to know that they are being well looked after. Before you know it, you will be settled in your new home, having experienced a stress-free move.

Want an Injunction? 10 Reasons you Don’t Want Your Ex to See Your Kids

So, you want to know why someone might get an injunction on their partner or ex-partner? To find out why this might be the only answer for many, read on…

An injunction, in the form of a non-molestation order, is a court order to prevent a family member or ex-partner from seeing your kids. For the health and safety of all involved, this really could be the last resort.

Maybe you’re unsure why anyone would stop their ex-partner or partner from seeing their children? Alternatively, you might want to apply for an injunction yourself, and are unsure if your situation fits? Or, perhaps you’re even looking into disputing a non-molestation order placed on you, and want to hear the facts?

Whatever the case, a non-molestation order might just be the only answer there is at this point. To discover more, read on…

What is an Injunction?

An injunction is basically a restraining order. By applying for one through a court, you can stop a person from harassing you, or getting too close to you, with the threat of imprisonment or a fine. There are two types of injunction when it comes to family law, and these include:

  • Non-Molestation Order: this prevents your ex-partner or partner from pestering, approaching, or threatening you and/or your child.
  • Occupation Order: this is an injunction order on property, and regulates who is able to live in the family home or the surrounding area. So, even if they still live with you, you can restrain them from entering the home.

In each case, the order is in place to ensure the protection of you and your child. Through preventing any unwanted violence, harassment, or danger, you can better ensure your health and safety is prioritised.

When Can You Apply for a Non-Molestation Order?

A non-molestation order doesn’t just apply to parents. It can apply to any family member or partner falling under these categories:

  • You are or have been in a marriage or civil partnership
  • You have a physical
  • You have lived or cohabited with one another.
  • You are blood-related.
  • You share parental responsibility with them.

10 Reasons You Might Not Want Your Ex to See Your Kids

All of this may sound a little extreme, and you might be wondering, “why would anyone stop their ex from seeing their kids?” Well, you might be surprised to learn that there are actually a huge number of reasons why they might do so. Although there could be more specific reasons out there, some common reasons to get a non-molestation order include:

1.     They Physically Abused the Kids

The sad truth is that there are a huge number of children who suffer from abuse from their parents. In fact, it’s estimated that around one in five UK adults said they experienced abuse, in some way, shape, or form, as a child. These figures are pretty staggering, and it can be assumed that there are a similar number of children going through the same right now.

Physical abuse is not only detrimental to a child’s physical health but also their mental health too. Yes, they may experience bumps, bruises, and pain along the way. That said, it is the mental scarring that will last a lifetime, and this should be avoided at all costs.

2.     They Physically Abused You

Okay, so what if your ex abused you, and not the kids? Should you stop them from seeing your kids in this case?

The whole point of an injunction is that you perceive this person to be a threat. If they have abused you at some point, what’s to say that they won’t abuse the kids when they’re alone together too? Making sure you protect them from this possibility is paramount to ensure their safety.

3.     They Are Controlling and Coercive

In a similar way, your ex might also be a controlling person. Although this might not necessarily seem like a reason to prevent contact with the children, a controlling person could be very harmful. Someone who is coercive or controlling might exhibit the following tendencies:

  • They use emotional blackmail on you or the kids, like withdrawing affection, to make them feel guilty for not doing certain things;
  • Manipulation and lying;
  • Turning the children against you;
  • Controlling you or the children’s finances;
  • Showing extreme jealousy and paranoia;
  • Making you or the children feel worthless;
  • You or the kids are frightened of them;
  • Gaslighting you, to make you feel crazy;
  • Humiliating you or the children in front of friends or family;
  • Isolating you and the children from the outside world.

As you can see, a controlling person is not someone you’d want to have around your kids. Through emotional manipulation and often physical and sexual abuse too, a controlling person can be very dangerous. Having this person out of all your lives is much more important than preserving a parental link.

4.     They Are in Criminal Trouble

This one should go without saying really, but if your ex is constantly in and out of prison, this person is likely a threat. Whether it be a violent charge, a drug-related charge, or something in between, it’s likely that this person is not a great role-model for their children.

Of course, in some cases, having been in trouble doesn’t mean they will be again. If your ex has rehabilitated and made it out of confinement with a new perspective, by all means, don’t get an injunction immediately. That said, there is no harm in being wary of jumping into this, so an injunction could be necessary.

5.     Their Home is Unfit for Children

In cases of adoption and fostering, a house check is necessary to ensure the home is fit for child use. However, the same can’t be said for birth parents, so it’s down to the other half to ensure their ex’s home is appropriate for children.

This includes making sure there are no weapons or sharp objects, or any nasty places to slip or fall. Also, it’s important to check for damp and mould, as breathing this in over a prolonged period of time can be very dangerous. If this isn’t the case, and they refuse to do anything about it, some more extreme measures may need to be put in place.

6.     Their Parenting is Inappropriate

Inappropriate parenting is definitely something that kids must be shielded from. After all, parents are the ultimate role models for their children and can shape their own life choices. Some clear signs of inappropriate parenting to look out for are:

  • Drinking a lot around the child;
  • Taking drugs around them;
  • Having parties in the house whilst they’re there;
  • Having sexual relations with someone whilst the kids are around;
  • Or swearing excessively around them.

7.     They are an Addict

If you’re worried that your ex-partner is an alcohol or drug addict, then it’s important to shield your children from this. At the same time, don’t forget that someone who is an addict often has no control, so helping them where you can is so important too.

8.     They Neglect the Children

Similar to abuse, neglect is also a reason to apply for a non-molestation order. Neglect could come in a number of forms, but it mainly consists of:

  • Physical neglect: the basic human needs of the children aren’t met, including being fed, watered, and housed.
  • Emotional neglect: the parent ignores their child, so they aren’t played with or nurtured in the way they should be.
  • Medical neglect: the parent refuses to take their child to the doctor or dentist when they need to.

A child who is neglected may have poor hygiene, seem emotionally distant, and may have developmental problems, amongst other issues. So, if you notice that your children come back home from your ex’s home exhibiting any of these factors, you may need to think twice.

9.     They Don’t Take the Kids to School

Another form of neglect, but one which must be monitored on its own, is whether the parent takes their children to school. Making sure a child gets the education they need is paramount to their development; socially and cognitively.

If your ex doesn’t take that time out of their day to take them to school and supervise their homework each day, something must be done. Naturally, talking to them should be the first step, but if they refuse to make a change, an injunction can be put in place.

10. Their Friends are Dangerous

Finally, if your ex invited friends over to the house who seem to be a little on the threatening side, this is a warning sign. If they’re associating themselves with people like this, who’s to say they’re not exposing the children to this too.

What’s more, if their friends seem threatening, perhaps your ex is also threatening to other people? Protecting the children from this danger is paramount.

Think You Might Need an Injunction?

An injunction, in the form of a non-molestation order, is certainly a last straw. However, if you feel that you or your children are in danger, this is certainly the best option for you.

Have you ever filed for an injunction yourself, or do you think this might be on the cards for you? Perhaps you’ve simply learnt something new about why someone might file for a non-molestation order after reading this. Leave any thought in the comments down below; let’s start a conversation!
