Eco-friendly DIY for Children

In today’s world, it is more important than ever to teach our children about environmental sustainability and the impact of our actions on the planet.

Why it is important for children to learn about the environment

Educating children about the importance of sustainability and conservation can encourage them to adopt eco-friendly habits and make choices that reduce their impact on the environment.

Why it is important for children to do eco-friendly DIYS

One way to teach kids about eco-friendly concepts is by using eco-friendly themed DIYs to help educate them. These DIYS not only provide a fun educational activity for children but they can also promote the use of recycled and sustainable materials.

Engaging in eco-friendly DIYS can help children learn about the environment, the importance of conserving natural resources and ways to reduce waste.

One particularly interesting eco-friendly themed DIY activity is this recycling bin DIY!

Eco-friendly Recycling Bin DIY

This do-it-yourself craft is suitable for kids of all ages and is a fun and unique way to explain recycling to them.

In order to make this DIY, you need:

  • Recycled colored paper or cardboard
  • Scissors
  • Tape and/or glue
  • Pencil
  • A printer (optional)

Step 1:

Cut the colored paper so that it is the size you’d like your recycling bin to be.

Step 2:

Fold the paper into 4 equal parts, so you can form a rectangular cube shape. This will be the form of your recycling bin. You can tape or glue the sides together.

Step 3:

Use some leftover paper to cut a shape for the lid of the recycling bin. Then, you can fold this into four equal parts as well.

Step 4:

Fold this into a square and tape or glue the inside so that it sticks together.

Step 5:

Cut a square around the size of the lid. You can trace the edge of the lid to determine how big the square must be. It should overlap slightly so that you can tape or glue this on the inside.

Step 6:

Glue or tape the square to the edge of your lid.

Step 7:

Place the lid on the recycling bin.

Step 8:

Make the opening of the bin by making a hole and cutting a rectangle out.

Step 9:

Decide what type of recycling your bin will be, and print or draw the symbol on the bin. Then you can print or draw images of what you would put in this bin, could be glass jars, or plastic bottles, or newspapers etc.

Now while the kids play with this you can explain recycling to them, and why we separate recycling.

You can explain that recycling is the process of converting waste materials, from something we have used already, into new products. It involves collecting and processing materials such as plastic, paper and metal to create new products, rather than sending them to a landfill.
