“Chrissy the Shih Tzu may be the cutest canine detective on the job, but don’t let that button nose fool you—it’s perfectly able to sniff out a killer with a little help from her human friends. Great start to a fun new series!” ~ Sheila Webster Boneham,
Author of the award-winning Animals in Focus Mysteries

“Diane Wing does an excellent job of showing readers just how animals can communicate with us through images and actions when we are tuned into their frequency. Through the relationship between Autumn and Chrissy, Wing also shows the importance of therapy animals and how much they can help those who need them. Add in a sweet romance to the intrigue of the mystery and you’ve got a book that you won’t want to put down.” ~ Melissa Alvarez, Intuitive, animal communicator and author of
Animal Frequency and Llewellyn’s Little Book of Spirit Animals

“Diane Wing has created a wonderfully endearing little character in Chrissy the Shih Tzu. It really shines through that the author is an animal and dog lover. I can see these books quickly becoming a cherished addition to the cosy mystery genre.” ~ J. New, author of The Yellow Cottage Vintage Mysteries

My Review

This is the heart-warming tale (or tail!) of Chrissy the Shih Tzu who is found by the body of her pet parent, Gary Martin.  He’s been murdered and not only does Chrissy need rescuing but there’s the mystery of whodunnit to solve.  It turns out that Chrissy is a canine detective!

Chrissy is rescued by Autumn Clarke, herself dealing with the loss of her parents in a terrible car crash and the pair of them quickly become devoted companions, helping each other through the sadness of their loss.

Determined to get to the bottom of the mystery, Autumn begins her own sleuthing to discover what happened to her new charge and to Chrissy’s previous owner.

Chrissy, though, is like no other dog.  This cute canine detective communicates in a very special way to help Autumn piece together the puzzle of the crime, involving drugs, corrupt lawyers and a cast of unsavoury ladies who definitely don’t have Chrissy’s best interests at heart.

Throw in a little romance with hunky Detective Reed and you have a recipe for a gripping read that is sure to appeal to everyone, whether they are a dog lover or not.

And no, I didn’t guess who did it – which in my book always makes for a satisfying crime story.

I’m looking forward to further adventures with this winsome little canine detective.

About the author

Author, teacher, and perspective changer Diane Wing, M.A. enjoys exploring the mysteries of life and the way that people experience themselves and the world around them. A phenomenologist at the core, Diane uses a variety of techniques combined with discovering unique patterns experienced by her clients to reveal a deeper understanding of the self and to shift their perspective enabling them to move past obstacles that keep them stuck.

Wing’s books create a transformational experience for the reader while incorporating a bit of the unexpected. Many say that her fiction has a sense of Karmic justice rendered within the realm of the unknown and that her non-fiction brings about a heightened awareness of the self and the world to enhance understanding of our own internal transformations.

Diane Wing is dedicated to helping people get grounded and trust themselves, so they can live a peaceful and fulfilling life of joyful self-expression. She inspires others and teaches them to safely tap into the energies around them to turn anxiety into tranquillity. Her clients are those who are ready to stop struggling in their personal life so they can feel their best.

Wing sees connections between things that seem disparate to others and can help you see their significance in your life. She’s an idea person who helps you shift your perspective to see yourself and your life in a whole new way and is a master at bringing magick into the everyday. She wants to live in a world where people feel inspired and motivated to evolve beyond their current way of being. As a Perspective Changer and Blockage Buster, she’s a wiz at helping people find their Inner Magick to help them be happy in the present while creating their ideal future.

To that end, Diane Wing created a body of work focused on knowing the self at a deep level in order to build self-trust and self-confidence. Her books, both dark fantasy fiction and enlightening non-fiction, hold lessons based in Universal and Magickal Law and energetic consciousness.

Her games, Pathways and Insight Stones®, are systems of metaphysics designed to facilitate self-discovery, develop the intuitive ability, and to enhance self-awareness. The emphasis of her school, Wing Academy of Unfoldment, and of her radio show, Wing Academy Radio, helps students and listeners learn ways to take metaphysical and personal development concepts and apply them to everyday life in their own distinct way. It’s about going deeper and seeing the patterns of your life.

According to Diane Wing, “Ever since I was little, the world felt magickal. [Magick with a “k” is used to differentiate the magic of an illusionist or stage magician from the magick that includes your intuitive abilities and tapping into the flow of the Universe).

The world was beautiful and mysterious, filled with things to learn and experience. The path led me to become a lifetime student of metaphysics, mysticism, magick, and spirituality and to achieve a Master’s degree in psychology…and it all shows up in my writing. You never know what’s waiting around the bend.

“The world still feels magical to me; every act of nature, every energetic exchange, every new discovery is perceived through the eyes of wonder. I now understand that self-knowledge is the key to all magical operations; the discovery of our own Inner Magic is essential to living in concert with the Universe. We are the Magician, as in tarot, orchestrating and creating life in accordance with our true self.”

Diane is an avid reader, bibliophile, lover of trees, and a lifelong learner. She and her husband are pet parents to a sweet little Shih Tzu.

Mistletoe at Moonglow, The Moonglow Series, Book 1

The Timberton Hotel has always provided a perfect Christmas retreat for regular guests, as well as newcomers. But the small town of Timberton, Montana, hasn’t been the same since resident chef and artist, Mist, arrived, bringing a unique new age flavour to the old western town.

When guests check in for the holidays, they bring along worries, fears and broken hearts, unaware that Mist has a way of working magic in people’s lives. Old-fashioned time spent together, exquisite food, conversation and a snowball or two offer guests a chance to trade sadness for hope. One thing is certain: no matter how cold winter’s grip is on each guest, no one leaves Timberton without a warmer heart.

Silver Bells at Moonglow, The Moonglow Series, Book 2

Christmas at the Timberton Hotel arrives each year with a unique set of guests, some returning, some new. When this holiday brings a celebrity seeking reprieve, sisters who are distant yet closer to each other than they think, a widow approaching a new horizon, and an eclectic smattering of local townsfolk and visiting relatives, the season is certain to be eventful. Add in a hint of romance and there’s more than snow in the air around the small Montana town.

Elegant decor and exquisite cuisine from resident artist and chef, Mist, form a backdrop to much-needed camaraderie, bringing strangers and friends together. When the last note of Christmas carols has faded away, the soft whisper of silver bells from the front door’s wreath will usher guests and townsfolk alike back into the world with hope for the coming year.

Gingerbread at Moonglow, The Moonglow Series, Book 3

The small town of Timberton, Montana, boasts an ambience of near-magical proportions during the Christmas season, due in no small part to resident artist and chef Mist’s mysterious way of working small miracles in people’s everyday lives. Each year, return guests and new arrivals mingle with local townsfolk to enjoy companionship, exquisite decor, and exceptional cuisine at The Timberton Hotel.

As the aromas of ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg and molasses mix with heartfelt camaraderie and sweet romance, guests share reflections on family, friendship, and life. Although decorating the outside of a gingerbread house may prove easier than deciding what goes inside, no one leaves Timberton without renewed hope for the future.

My Review

Nutcracker Sweets at Moonglow is a festive treat for the senses.  Readers who enjoy a bit of outright sentimentality and a feel-good tale at Christmas will love this and there is even a selection of candy and cookie recipes to enjoy at the end of the story.

A novella rather than a full novel, I devoured Nutcracker Sweets with as much enjoyment as the hotel guests tucked into artist and chef Mist’s Christmas Eve buffet.

The burning down of the local theatre leads to extra guests at the Timberton Hotel for Christmas – dancers who were putting on the Nutcracker Ballet.  Mist takes the opportunity to share their talents with her guests whilst making a young girl’s dream come true at the same time.  But who is the mysterious Olga and what part does she play in all this?

Garner draws a picture which is as delightful as a Christmas snow globe with her descriptions of decor, dancing and above all food.  I’m passing this one on to my daughter Caitlin to read as it contains two of her most favourite things – ballet and sweets.

I’m off the read the previous three books in the series as this one is a perfect antidote to grey skies, cold weather and daily drudgery.  Nutcracker Sweets at Moonglow will appeal to anyone who likes their Christmas with a dollop of festive magic.

Book Review: Public Speaking Super Powers! By Carma Spence

If public speakers were superheroes, what would their superpowers be?

AND, COULD YOU DEVELOP THOSE SUPERPOWERS YOURSELF?

Author Carma Spence asked these questions of dozens and dozens of speakers and discovered the answer was, “Yes!”

Three out of every four people suffer from speech anxiety, and research suggests that people who don’t confront and overcome that fear are less successful in their careers and lives. However, people often look at successful speakers as superheroes with superpowers they, as mere mortals, could never possess.

Drawing from extensive research and interviews with business and professional speakers, Public Speaking Super Powers will show you how to:

↪ How to overcome the fear of speaking
↪ Develop the skills needed to be a success on the stage, such as storytelling and humour
↪ Master techniques like a superhero speaker, such as audience engagement, and using your voice, body language and eye contact effectively

and much more… There is even a bonus chapter on the business of speaking.

Unleash your inner Public Speaking Superhero and communicate your message with confidence starting today!

~ Davide Di Giorgio Speaker, Coach and Author of Being Unapologetic DavideDiGiorgio.com

My review

Having spent many years in a corporate environment, I had quite a few run-ins with the ghastliness of public speaking.  Talking to many of my colleagues, fear of public speaking seems to be often second only to a fear of death and yet it is probably the skill the separates the lower tier workers from the high fliers.

The husband travels the world in his role as solutions architect for a global IT company and a large part of that work involves addressing audiences of varying sizes whilst explaining how to configure a network and answer any and all questions off the bat.

My own last attempt was decidedly less glorious.  Whilst addressing the latest intake of legal trainees to explain to them that involvement with marketing was not optional but a key part of their role, I managed to knock over a heavy wooden lectern with a resounding crash.  Even worse, the man responsible for the trainees’ recruitment was my ex-boyfriend and he was sat in the audience.  Talk about wishing the ground would swallow you up.

So, if I had had Carma Spence’s gutsy and encouraging book, Public Speaking Super Powers, I might have been better prepared, more confident and better able to engage with the group of blankly staring faces (and the smirking ex-boyfriend).

Spence’s book is a real call to arms for those of us who would rather hide in the stationery cupboard to get out and share our message via public speaking.  Everyone, she says, has a message and, who knows, yours could have the potential to change someone’s life.  On that basis, not sharing it would be rather selfish.

Her various superheroes illustrate that there are many different types of public speakers and that there is not one right way to do it.  In fact, different presentations often require different styles.

What is important is the authenticity of the message and being able to connect with the audience to convince them that you are speaking from the heart.

Public speaking skills are broken down into components such as authenticity and engagement in separate chapters, each of which is chock-full of helpful and motivating words for expert speakers in their field and contains lots of exercises to get you thinking.

Actually, I thought lots of Spence’s advice reaches further than public speaking and her exercises could equally be used for personal or career-related goal setting because they are designed to help you learn about yourself – so that you can get clear on the message you want to share.

If you have to give a speech, whether at a wedding, the local council or in work, I recommend you pick up Carma’s book and take heed of her ‘feel the fear because it could make you a better speaker” ethos.  It even made me feel like I could get back on stage – but this time no heavy wooden lecterns please.

About the author

Carma Spence, author Public Speaking Super Powers, is a self-confessed “geek who speaks.” She is fiercely committed to supporting people who are introverted, shy, possibly even socially awkward as they unleash their inner speaking superhero and boldly communicate their message with confidence. Her superpower is to help her clients see what is possible for them and guiding them on the journey from where they are to where they want to be, Vanquishing the Mind Goblins of self-doubt, self-sabotage and second-guessing that keep them stuck.

Carma is an award-winning editor and speaker, as well as International Best-Selling Author, with more than 20 years experience in marketing, public relations, and science communication. She lettered in Speech in high school and earned a Degree of Honor with the National Speech & Debate Association. She has been a member of Toastmasters (off and of) since 1989 and has earned her Distinguished Toastmaster (DTM) award, an award earned by completing a variety of speaking and leadership assignments in the Toastmasters program.

Public Speaking Super Powers is her fifth book and is published under the Author Academy Elite imprint.

Review: Goth Girl And The Sinister Symphony

Caitlin has read all the Goth Girl books and loved them and this latest, Goth Girl And The Sinister Symphony is the final book in this Costa award-winning series written by Chris Riddell. Riddell was Children’s Laureate from 2015 – 2017 and his love of language shines through. And, as you can guess, music features heavily!

Goth Girl and The Sinister Symphony book cover

It’s summer and Lord Goth (England’s foremost cycling poet) is holding a music festival at Ghastly-Gorm Hall.  He’s searching for his headlining act at ‘Gothstock’ but who should it be?

Ada has enough on her plate with her grandmother trying to find her father a fashionable new wife, a faun in her wardrobe and Maltravers up to his old tricks. It’s up to her to make sure everything goes to plan, and luckily she has some help from a very interesting house guest.

Caitlin, my very own Goth Girl

As usual, Chris Riddell’s humour appeals as much to older readers as it does to youngsters.  The target age group of the series is 9-11 which is spot on for Caitlin but I enjoyed it too.  The plot is fast-paced and there really is no chance to get bored – always a challenge with younger readers. You’ll also find lots of observations on society and amusing wordplay throughout which will appeal to mums and dads.

The book is full of Riddell’s signature black and white illustrations and pun-filled characters for the whole family to enjoy together, Sir Sydney Harbour-Bridge being one of my favourites.

Goth Girl And The Sinister Symphony is published by Macmillan Children’s Books on 20th September.  Paperback RRP:  £6.99.  You can connect with Chris Riddell on Twitter as @chrisriddell50 and on Instagram as chris_riddell.

Autumn is truly here and I love it.  Readers of this blog will know Halloween is one of my favourite events and, in fact, I love everything about autumn – the warming food, the colours of the leaves and the crisp freshness of the air.

For some of us, though, the decrease in sunlight may make us more prone to anxiety and depression or even seasonal affective disorder.  If this is you, make sure you prioritise your self-care and if you are feeling ropey have a chat with a good friend or even your doctor. If like me, you suffer from an onset of the back to school blues, you may find some ideas to cheer you up in this post.

The kids are more or less back in the swing of things and have discovered that, like their father, they really enjoy coding and creating their own online games.  Could this mean the end of Fortnite and the birth of a game which enthrals more than Candy Crush?

It’s probably a bit too early to tell but if you have young gamers in the family who are likely to spend lots of time in their rooms now the nights are drawing in, you might find these ideas for keeping kids safe online useful.

Mum is continuing to recuperate thank heavens and I’m very glad that I’m no longer a hospital visitor.  If you’ve ever been in hospital you might recognise some of your hospital visitors in this post.

The Husband has been in Holland this week on business and I’m hoping that in spring we might venture to Amsterdam to show the kids the sights.  Caitlin read The Diary of Anne Frank last year and I would really love to show her Anne’s house which is now a museum.

In the meantime I’m investing in lots of lovely candles, getting the throws out and preparing to hunker down with all the great TV that’s on – particularly since we’ve discovered NOW TV.  And, of course, I’ve plenty to read.

My Review

There’s something pretty unique about this book because, unlike the many, many self-help books I’ve read which encourage you to visualise your perfect self and step into it, Davide is categorical that you need to START WITH WHO YOU ARE.

This is particularly fascinating because most of us do anything we can to avoid such a close inspection.  You only have to read the works of Louise Hay to know that many of us struggle to even look at ourselves in the mirror.

The book is really a journey of self-discovery in which you have to go back to see how you typically show up in situations and from that to work out who you are and what your special gifts as a leader may be.  What, Davide asks, do you say “hell no!” to.  Equally, what are those things that excite you and for which you have a natural talent?  The clues are often there from the very beginning.  As a child, Davide’s gift for music was apparent, even though it wasn’t the one his parents wanted him to have.

Davide suggests that in order to be unapologetically you (far better, he says than trying to be unforgettable), you start with this voyage of discovery and compile a book of your ‘extraordinary everyday moments’ – both good and bad – again, a realistic viewpoint I liked.

This diary or journal will become the blueprint for who you are and will help you become an inspirational speaker and leader because you will finally discover what you stand for, what really matters to you and the truths you have to speak, even in the face of fear.

To encourage you further, there is lots of brilliant encouragement from 18 other influencers who share how they have become unstoppable in the face of the many challenges life tends to throw at us.

Davide encourages us to ‘go all in’ – in other words, to feel the fear and do it anyway and whilst I might not have his indefatigable energy and verve, I did finish the book feeling that Davide’s advice would help all of us to feel more confident in our daily lives, even if we’re not planning to take to the stage.

And that, as a busy mum of two, is no bad thing.

Highly recommended.

I launched the presales for BEING UNAPOLOGETIC on my 42nd birthday because I’ve decided that it’s time…

It’s time for YOU to recognize the miracle you are and to live out your miracle so that others will be the beneficiaries of the collective blessings we all have to share!

Through my story of recognizing my own gifts, I have made it my life’s work to shine the spotlight on others so that together, we can change the world, for the better!

Read the stories of EVERYDAY EXTRAORDINARY humans

You’ll learn from and read the stories of 20+ other visionary entrepreneurs, coaches, and leaders who I hand-picked for how they exemplify being UNapologetic (and beyond) in their own lives.

Be part of a BIGGER VISION to CHANGE THE WORLD!

BEING UNAPOLOGETIC also marks the launch of a larger vision and passion project – to give back, honour, support, and celebrate Performing Arts Teachers and Students.

The performing arts saved my life – and now I am using this book as the vehicle to educate, inspire, and empower students and teachers to create more community, collaboration, and contribution as I create the opportunities for them to learn how to fund their biggest, wildest, most audacious dream projects – AND – to tell the world about it, and to inspire millions BILLIONS along the way!

…YES, BILLIONS!

Here’s how it will work… a portion of every book pre-sold will go towards one (or more) dream projects for a performing arts program.

I’m currently looking for teachers and students who are up to big things – with big dreams. I’m going to start locally, in San Diego (before I expand to include the whole country and the world!). I want to get to know the students and teachers, work with them to start empowering them to fund their dream project (Hey, 10 years as a music teacher myself, I learned a few things about fundraising, building community, and creating big impact) and then surprising them with an experience that is very personalized and unique.

TAKE A STAND with ME!

The tragedies going on in high schools today in this country break my heart. They completely overshadow and annihilate the greatness of extraordinary students and teachers who are working towards big dreams, goals, and visions.

I am taking a stand for every student and teacher who has to live in uncertainty.

I am taking a stand for those students and teachers who are bullied.

I am taking a stand for those high achievers who are up to something big and for those bright lights who don’t know how bright they even are.

Join me in making a being THE change, and

BEING UNAPOLOGETIC about it! Be unapologetically you!

Review: The Teenage Girls Survival Bible by Jane Bradley

Caitlin may be 11 in November but she has all the attitude and anxiety of a teenager already.  I was intrigued, then, to discover The Teenage Girls Survival Bible by Jane Bradley which Caitlin has secreted in her room and is reading from cover to cover.  Inside the book covers all the most important teenage girls issues.

Jane Bradley is a highly successful make-up artist to the stars and she also shares her years of insider knowledge on make-up, skincare, hair care and style. She reveals the ‘behind the scenes’ secrets of a celebrity photo shoot and sheds light on the harsh realities of ‘fame’.

The book is absolutely brimming with tips, life hacks and advice and in its pages, you’ll find advice on boys and break-ups, friendships and love, bullying and panic attacks, depression and self-esteem. All the teenage girls issues are here.

teenage girls issues - Caitlin holding The Teenage Girls Survival Bible book

There’s plenty of advice about the developing teenage girl’s body too; from bad breath to B.O., periods, contraception and pregnancy.

Inside you’ll find tips about being streetwise including topics such as tattoos and body piercing.

In all honesty, it is, as the title suggests, more suitable for teens familiar with the facts of life and for whom dating and sex is looming large on the horizon, but there’s nothing here to scare the horses – just sensible, good old-fashioned advice that you might expect from a big sister or, hopefully, your mum.

You may not feel comfortable letting your tween read about some of the topics, but then again, by raising the topic you at least have a chance to discuss things with your daughter. Personally, I find that the lines between tween and teen are becoming increasingly blurred and ‘teenage’ issues seem to be raising their head far earlier than they did in my younger years.

We all know how uncommunicative teens can be and this is the sort of book that Jane hopes teens will buy for themselves. It is also, I would suggest, worth giving to a more sophisticated tween to discuss growing up with them. Teenage girls issues are rapidly becoming the problems of our tweens too.

I recently discovered that some of Caitlin’s peer group watched the last series of Love Island which, in my view, was totally unsuitable for girls of her age. At least with a book like this, you can open up some sort of dialogue in a way that might get you listened to.  Hopefully!

I particularly like Jane’s clear spelling out of the fact that, when it comes to sex, no means no – no matter what girls are wearing or how much they have drunk.

As a girl, Jane was extremely shy.  She thought was ugly and was bullied. Reaching puberty, she says her ears stuck out, she was goofy and lanky but her mum made it her business to instil self-love, self-belief and self-confidence into her.  Meeting her boyfriend’s teenage daughters inspired her to write The Teenage Girls Survival Bible to share this advice.

We really liked the book and it is now carefully hidden in Caitlin’s bedroom from where it appears from time to time as she shares another useful snippet of advice – e.g. how many calories are in wine.  I can’t think why.

There are also lots of really practical tips (3 basic meals to make, how to interpret washing instructions on clothing) and lots of advice that applies to any age – or gender!

The Teenage Girls Survival Bible is published by Troubador Publishing Limited RRP £15.99.  The book is available on Amazon.co.uk.

It’s the start of the new school year tomorrow and I’ve spent the day wrestling with ironing, labelling everything in my path and mentally berating myself for not making more of the long summer holiday.  If, like me, you suffer from an onset of the back to school blues, you may find some ideas to cheer you up in this post.

[shopr_shopthepost collection=”book-linky-2808″ title=”From This Week’s Selection” show_product_title=”yes” show_product_price=”yes”]

I’m already missing Devon so much that we have already rebooked for my birthday in 2019 when I will reach the rather scary age of 55.  I have to say I never know where the time goes and, when it comes to age, I always find myself very reflective (and somewhat melancholy) on the subject as you can see from a post I wrote a few years ago now when I reached the age of 52.

Mum is back out of hospital and normal family life has resumed.  The Husband is flying around Europe whilst I man the fort at home. Caitlin starts year 6 and Ieuan is now in year 5 and after 6 weeks on their iPads they could definitely do with some non screen-related mental activity!

As I wrote last week, they are both looking forward to seeing their friends again but for us introvert mums, the whole school run thing can be a bit of an ordeal.

It’s back to ballet for Caitlin and back to football for Ieuan so the family taxi is in need of a spruce to purge it of sweet wrappers and sand.  At least when I’m waiting around to pick them up I can catch up with my reading and, as usual, you will find some free and bargain books from Beck Valley Books on this link.

Look out for my upcoming review on 7th September of a fabulous motivational book by Davide Di Giorgio entitled “Being Unapologetic, Empowering You to Become an Influential Speaker and Visionary Leader”.  I’ll give you a clue.  The secret is all about being who you already ARE.  I’ll leave you to mull that one over until next time.

Have a great week!

Book Review: Psycho In Paradise by Deborah Brown

Book Tour Logo for Psycho In Paradise by Deborah Brown

Book front cover of Psycho In Paradise by Deborah Brown

Psych0 In Paradise …

In the Florida Keys, you have to take the shady with the sunny. And Tarpon Cove has more than fifty shades of shady going on.

Shady No. 1: When Brad is caught with the dead body of his crazy ex-girlfriend—a body he swears was planted—the Westin family gathers to plan a strategy. That family now including Fab, Didier, and Creole by default.

Shady No. 2: Fab is having a hard time keeping her promise to go legit. It’s not her fault she tends to attract clients who want their problems solved without getting the cops involved. Trying to keep her reined in is a full-time job, and a thankless one, since Madison keeps getting roped in on “easy” jobs that wind up getting the kind of messy that require specialized cleanup.

Shady No. 3: Ferreting out the info needed to save Brad means using sources so deep in the friend-of-a-friend network they’re anonymous.

The only thing not shady is Creole’s love. Madison’s kept her promise never to lie to him. Mostly. But when the killer wafts like smoke through the cracks in the investigation, it reminds her she should’ve eaten dessert first more often.

The Paradise series, are Florida Keys mysteries, “great as stand-alone reads, but they’re like chips…you won’t be able to devour just one!”

South Florida author Deborah Brown books are infectious.

“My love for these quirky characters grows with every book! Hope they never end!”

“Deborah Brown has done it again. I don’t think I could ever get tired of Madison, Fab, and the rest of the gang. These books are always laugh outloud funny and this one is no different. Psycho in Paradise has plenty of twists and turns that kept me turning pages. It’s filled with adventure, suspense, thrills, and fun characters. It’s impossible to put down.”

My review

It’s been a while since I have reviewed a ‘Paradise’ book but returning to the series with this one, Psycho in Paradise is like putting on a comfy pair of slippers and meeting up with a gang of old friends.

This time Madison’s brother Brad is in the frame for the murder of his ex, Patty.  Is he innocent or has he been framed?  In amongst Fab and Madison’s madcap adventures, hunky Creole and Didier try to exert some sort of order with the two feisty female detectives – not always succeeding.  Could there be a marriage on the cards?

Mother and Spoon are still in charge of the Westin clan but there’s the appearance of the enigmatic Caspian, Fab’s biological father.  Handsome, very wealthy but does he have an agenda.

As usual, Brown takes us on a breathless whirl around the Keys with one adventure after another and the inhabitants of The Cottages are as wacky and unusual as ever – and Miss January is in love.  Again.

I won’t spoil the plot any more other to say you’ll really enjoy Psycho In Paradise and there’s plenty of sunshine yet to be extracted from the Paradise series.

About the Author

I’ve been writing, in one way or another for as long as I can remember; poetry, sappy short stories (my best friend made me swear that I’d never show anyone until I changed the names), and a romance novel shoved under my bed.

I wanted to create books with a wide range of unforgettable characters, with heat and romance, and lots of guns. It wouldn’t be complete without a slice of humour and charm.

I live with my family and demon children aka rescue cats in South Florida.

Review: Antarctic Tears By Polar Explorer Aaron Linsdau

Antarctic Tears: Determination, adversity, and the pursuit of a dream at the bottom of the world

Antarctic Tears: Determination, adversity, and the pursuit of a dream at the bottom of the world by [Linsdau, Aaron]

Emotions run high in this true polar adventure. It’s a story of triumph, harrowing danger, and outright adventure. In 2012, Aaron Linsdau left his entire life behind.

Gone was the engineering career. He told his family and girlfriend that he wanted to pursue a dream to do something no other American had ever accomplished. He wanted to be the first to ski from the coast of Antarctica to the South Pole and back without aid or support. Alone.

The journey to the South Pole covers over 700 miles through the most forbidding frozen terrain on the planet. The temperature is always below zero and gale force winds routinely roar across the ice. The polar plateau is devoid of life. There are no plants, animals, or insects. Antarctica provides no shelter, no protection, and is unforgiving of any mistake.

But before the expedition was to start, there was much to do. Linsdau trekked 100 miles across the Greenland tundra. He skied across Yellowstone in the winter, camping in -45 degree temperatures. Towing tires up mountains and eating 4000 calories a day was preparation for Antarctica.

Previous expeditions have lost tents, helplessly watching them blow over the horizon. Many explorers have quit or been rescued. What began as a brave adventure into the unknown turned into a battle for survival.

Linsdau takes the reader to Antarctica. They experience incredible storms, skiing blind through whiteouts, crossing invisible crevasses, and skirting disaster. The book shows what happened every day of the expedition.

The air is cold enough to freeze water in seconds and cause frostbite in minutes. Only outer space is less hospitable. Driven by passion, he sacrifices nearly everything to make his dream come true. This is a story about personal discovery, testing the limits of human endurance, total dedication to achieving a goal, and never giving up even when both body and equipment fail.

There were many surprises during Aaron Linsdau’s expedition to the South Pole…

Antarctic Tears is also available as an audiobook in a 9CD box set or as MP3 files on a USB thumb drive.

My Review

Antarctic Tears is the memorable account of Aaron Linsdau’s solo trek to the South Pole and in it, the reader learns exactly what it takes to survive in one of the planet’s most inhospitable environments.  From dragging a tyre around the streets for months to build up his strength, to lugging large quantities of butter, the book is full of “I did not know that” moments which educate and entertain.

Linsdau’s modest relating of his achievements has the reader rooting for him all the way. There are some hair-raising moments, not least when Aaron starts to cough up blood and the description of the sheer whiteness of the Antartic is both amazing and frightening.

Most days Linsdau’s progress is incredibly slow, just one or two miles a day as he fights against humidity, blizzards and hurricane force winds.  Despite this, he never gives in and battles on with a determination we could all do with our progress towards our goals.

The book also contains a fascinating summary of previous polar attempts which I found fascinating. Why did Scott’s attempt fail whilst Shackleton’s succeeded?  I’m now a convert to tales from great explorers.

Highly recommended.

Lost at Windy Corner: Lessons From Denali On Goals and Risks

Lost at Windy Corner: Lessons From Denali On Goals and Risks by [Linsdau, Aaron]
Lost near lethal crevasses and cliffs in a blinding whiteout blizzard is the last place anyone would want to be…

Windy Corner on Denali has claimed lives, fingers, and toes. What would make someone brave lethal weather, crevasses, and slick ice to attempt to summit North America’s highest mountain? Denali has claimed over one hundred lives. It seems like the place for risky adrenaline seekers.

In “Lost at Windy Corner”, the author shares the lessons Denali teaches on managing goals and risks. Everyone takes chances at some time in their lives, even if it’s driving down the highway. Becoming a risk manager rather than a risk taker is what will keep you alive during difficult times.

Experience the cold, solitude, and uncertainty of life on high mountains. Apply the message, build resilience, and overcome adversities in your life.

My Review

I am probably the least likely person to become an explorer or to brave extreme climatic conditions so I wasn’t sure I was going to enjoy Aaron Linsdau’s fascinating account of man against mountain.  I actually found it difficult to put “Lost at Windy Corner” down.

For a start, I had no idea what was involved in climbing a mountain, particularly one upon which you could be either baked or frozen during 24 hours and on which one wrong foot could see you plunge into the abyss.

Linsdau shares all the details of his solo attempt to scale Denali from a physical, emotional and psychological standpoint and at the end of each chapter leaves the reader with a lesson on managing risk, and most importantly, maintaining a positive attitude.

During his ascent, he meets a number of fascinating characters, some of whom are unforgettable, for example, the Romanian father with his 12-year-old daughter or Felix who has comrades further up the mountain he hasn’t seen for days.

The non-adventurous among us may spend most of the book wondering what drives an explorer like Linsdau to take such risks but there is no room for adrenalin junkies on Denali.  Linsdau seems to be the master of the inspired, but calculated risk.

I really enjoyed this one and tomorrow you can read my review of Linsdau’s adventure in one of the bleakest places on earth, Antarctica.

It’s a gloriously warm day today and we’re hoping the sunshine is going to last for Whitsun and our voyage to Devon.

It’s a chance for the whole family to relax together and hopefully spend time on one of our favourite beaches at Bantham. I also enjoy it because I get to stay in a beautiful house that doesn’t need any DIY or cleaning.  Bliss!

Obviously, I’ll have a fully stocked medicine chest in case of any typically Devon illness such as Beri Beri or the Bubonic Plague because you can’t be too careful, can you?  And, of course we’ll make sure we have the full travel sickness kit for the kids!

It’s still revision season so if your kids are going through the stress of exam revision, you’ll find this post about revision and this post about coping with the stress useful.

And, even though Mental Health Awareness Week is over it’s still important that we keep talking about our mental health and encourage others to open up about their struggles.  You may find these posts useful OCD, social anxiety and coping with anxiety generally.  Check them out if you feel as if you’re in the same boat.

As usual, there are some great books on the linky – and don’t forget you can always add your own to spread a bit of book love.

Don’t forget that I still have plenty to be won on my giveaways page and don’t forget my weekly problem page here.

Happy hunting for your free and bargain books on this link.

Have a great week!
